SHATTUCK CALLS FOR VOTER UPRISING

May 8, 2014
IRONDALE, AL -- Last night, 6th Congressional district candidate Rob Shattuck continued to press his campaign theme that "the common enemy of average Republicans, average Democrats and average independents is the political class in Washington, DC."

Speaking at a candidate forum at the Pine Tree Country Club sponsored by the Exchange Club of Irondale, Shattuck talked about the stark contrast between himself and the other six candidates.

Shattuck said the message to the voters of the other six candidates is "your enemy is Obama and the Democrats."

In a Congressional race that has been filled with three months of decrying about matters the American people are very concerned about, Shattuck asked the audience to think about several of them.

On health care, Shattuck refereed to the Republicans in Washington in 2001 to 2007 when they were in control, and Shattuck pointed to their failure to take action on health care reform that would have been more to Republican liking. Similarly, on Social Security, Shattuck mentioned that the Republicans in Washington in 2001 to 2007 failed to take appropriate action to address increased life expectancies.

Shattuck mentioned how one of the other candidates had done an AL.com essay about the EPA killing small business. Shattuck said he did not think average Democrats and average independents wanted to kill small business, but to the contrary they wanted small business to thrive and provide jobs. "Something is not computing here," Shattuck said.

By the same token, Shattuck said he did not think average Democrats and average independents cheered on the climbing national debt clock, and, again said, "something is not computing here."

In contrast to the message of the other candidates that "your enemy is Obama and the Democrats," Shattuck said his message is "the common enemy of average Republicans, average Democrats and average independents is the political class in Washington DC." Shattuck referred to it being an "iron triangle" of lawmakers (Republican and Democratic), lobbyists, and big funders and leaders of special interest organizations. This political class, Shattuck said, has put its personal interests too much ahead of the interests of the American people.

A chief tool of the political class for preserving its entrenched position, and increasing its wealth and power, Shattuck said, was to keep the electorate divided and polarized, and that its "ace in the hole" was that average Republicans, average Democrats and average independents could never unite temporarily to force a change in how Washington works.

Shattuck concluded his remarks by projecting more years of a Congress that has stopped functioning for the American people, and said the only solution was for changes in the way Washington works to be forced on Congress by the American people, and to do that "an uprising of voters around the country" was needed. While Shattuck acknowledged he was a long shot, he said that the 6th district primary election was an early test case in the 2014 election cycle, and that the 6th Congressional district was an opportunity for a start to the needed voter uprising around the country.
