Today's Northwell Health's Gun Violence Prevention Forum

MY STATEMENT TO THE FORUM
I am a retired lawyer in Alabama.

I have taken an inordinate interest in gun violence reduction.

My main focus has been the Second Amendment, what it protects and does not protect, and how common sense gun laws should be shaped, advocated for, and defended in the courts.

The history-and-tradition framework for gun cases that the United States Supreme Court enunciated in the Bruen case this past summer has made gun control much more difficult to achieve in the United States. See Supreme Court ruling creates turmoil over gun laws in lower courts | PBS NewsHour; Tracking the Effects of the Supreme Court’s Gun Ruling

I have come up with the mantra  #GunsForSelfDefenseOnly to guide the shaping, advocating for, and defending in the courts, common sense gun solutions.

I have solicited constitutional law professors in Alabama and elsewhere to consider the constitutional viability of such mantra for pursuing gun control. See https://al6thcongdist-ihaveuntiljan13.blogspot.com/2022/12/gunsforselfdefenseonly-contd.html and
https://al6thcongdist-ihaveuntiljan13.blogspot.com/2022/10/pressuring-gov-ivey-for-leadership-on.html.

The Forum's stated purpose is "to serve to mobilize the collective efforts of leading executives, clinicians, researchers, and policymakers around gun violence as a public health emergency."

I offer this statement to the Forum and its participants for their consideration.

I will endeavor to share the Forum by means of this blog entry https://al6thcongdist-ihaveuntiljan13.blogspot.com/2023/02/todays-northwell-health-gun-violence.html and linking to this blog entry that I will do in tweets and emails.

My comments/questions prompted by Forum
1. One Forum presenter said it was better to keep children from having to choose sides in national gun debate. That may be desirable but it would seem impossible to shield children from hearing the e 2nd Amendment extremist side adamantly pronouncing that Second Amendment is absolute, everyone needs to have gun to resist governmental tyranny, everyone needs to carry gun to protect themselves in public, and guns are fundamental to the American way of life  This should be countered in a public way by President Biden, governors, mayors, law makers and law enforcement making a "Declaration of public officials for gun violence prevention" such as is set out https://al6thcongdist-ihaveuntiljan13.blogspot.com/2022/09/declaration-of-public-officials-for-gun.html. It should be coupled with mantra #GunsForSelfDefenseOnly

Dear Rob,

Thank you for participating in Northwell Health’s 2023 Gun Violence Prevention Forum.

Across a range of topics and focus areas, from Changing Cultural Norms to Unlocking the Power of Data to Intervention & Prevention Strategies and so much more, we engaged in substantive, action-oriented dialogue that will accelerate efforts toward ending this public health emergency.

The passion and commitment demonstrated by the more than 2,000 healthcare and organizational leaders who participated both virtually and in person were truly inspiring. We hope to continue to collaborate with you all – clinicians & administrators, gun safety advocates, government leaders, business executives, law enforcement, and the public – to take action and reject the violence that claims more than 40,000 lives each year.

I want to particularly recognize and thank all the presenters and discussion leaders who came together to share their perspectives and visions around ending gun violence. To re-watch the sessions and share them with your peers, please find video recordings here.

Just as our predecessors in the healthcare industry successfully advocated for motor vehicle seat-belt laws, air-bags, smoking bans in workplaces and public places, and other public health reforms, today’s healthcare leaders must raise our collective voices and leverage the resources of our industry to push for common-sense gun safety strategies that will improve and protect the health of our communities.

Working together, we can change the fact that firearms are the number-one killer of children and adolescents in the U.S. We can unify our call for the safe storage of firearms to reduce unintentional shootings. And we can make the communities we serve a safe place to thrive.

In safety and good health,

Michael J. Dowling

I hope I have gotten some attention to my statement to the Forum that is set out at http://al6thcongdist-ihaveuntiljan13.blogspot.com/2023/02/todays-northwell-health-gun-violence.html.
After months of trying, I still haven't gotten feedback on my mantra of #GunsForSelfDefenseOnly.
I will keep trying to get feedback.

Braver Angels Birmingham Alliance

Braver Angels is a "national movement to bridge the partisan divide."
Per the below email, it has gotten started a Birmingham Alliance.

Email announcing formation of Braver Angels Birmingham Alliance
From: Theo Brown <tbrown@braverangels.org>
Sent: Mon, Feb 20, 2023 1:44 pm
Subject: Announcing New Braver Angels Alliance in Birmingham
Good Day to All Braver Angels Contacts in Birmingham,
We are excited to announce that some Braver Angels members in Birmingham have applied for and been accepted as a formal Alliance by the Braver Angels national leadership team. This makes us eligible to represent Braver Angels in a variety of ways and host both in person and zoom trainings and workshops. We are now making plans for our first workshop as well as other events that will give us a chance to get to know each other in a safe environment. This is a big step for Birmingham and we hope to take the opportunity to celebrate together.
For every Braver Angels Alliance there must be both a “red” and “blue” co-chair and we are appreciative of the two Braver Angels members in Birmingham who have agreed to take this responsibility:
· Steve Whitaker, Red Co-Chair--Steven Whitaker works as an enterprise architect for EBSCO information Systems and lives in Birmingham. As an Alabama native, he is lucky to have had many friends across the political spectrum, which is one of the reasons he was drawn to Braver Angels. In recent years, he has noticed that the number of topics he can safely discuss with friends has decreased and there has been a dramatic rise in emotional language and anger. He hopes to help reduce the heat in political discussions and remind everyone that they can engage in productive, principled conversations without being enemies. You can reach Steve at Swhitaker@braverangels.org
· Barbara Eiland, Blue Co-chair--Barbara is a retired grandmother of 7. She has worked as an EMT and Case Manager of Mentally Ill, Chemically Dependent and Mentally Retarded patients in various cities and also in Germany for two years. She heard about Braver Angels on CBS This Morning and was impressed by what the organization is doing to promote civility in political discussions. She is looking forward to growing the Birmingham Alliance and helping to organize lots of events. Contact her at Beiland@braverangels.org.
Now we would like to inspire you to take the next step in your Braver Angels journey. We invite you to do that in three ways:
1. If you haven’t already done so, we strongly encourage you to become a member of Braver Angels. You can join on the website (www.braverangels.org) and membership is only $1 a month (although you can donate more if you wish) and it provides access to all Braver Angels information, activities, resources and workshops.
2. We will also need volunteers to help us run events. As you can see on the website there are several volunteer roles for you to consider. We are happy to answer questions and help you find the best fit for you. We specifically need Moderators and Ambassadors to help conduct events and assist with recruitment. Please contact one of the co-chairs or let me know if you want to explore ways you can help.
3. Register for one of the online trainings, workshops or Braver Angels debates that are of interest to you. These free events are listed on the website under the Braver Angels Event Calendar. Participants in these online activities regularly report how glad they were they attended and how much they learned. Participants are often surprised by how much we all have in common and how much we share the same hopes and dreams for this country.
Please contact me and/or your co-chairs if you are interested in helping Braver Angels in any way. We are encouraged to be starting this Birmingham Alliance and will be back in touch soon about upcoming local activities. In the meantime, we hope to hear from you that you’d like to help and also let us know if you have any questions or suggestions.
All the best,

To the addressee Alabama professors:
I wish to call to the attention of appropriate academic departments and professors in Alabama the Braver Angels organization, which describes itself as a "national movement to bridge the partisan divide."
I particularly wish to call to your attention the many professors around the country who are listed on the Braver Angels Scholars Council at https://braverangels.org/scholars-council/
Further I wish to call your attention to the Braver Angels College Debates and Discourse program described at https://www.goacta.org/initiatives/college-debates/.
As I indicate in https://al6thcongdist-ihaveuntiljan13.blogspot.com/2023/02/braver-angels-birmingham-alliance.html, I think Braver Angels is only now getting active in Alabama.
If you have not been previously aware of Braver Angels, I hope you will consider whether involvement by Alabama professors and academic departments in the activities of Braver Angels will advance the educational objectives of Alabama's colleges and universities and, if so, you will take steps towards such involvement happening.
Thank you.

Hounding #SenKatieBritt on healthcare

Below is what Katie Britt said on the "Issue" pager of her campaign website regarding healthcare

First, we must repeal and replace Obamacare with a plan that protects preexisting conditions and patient rights. More than a decade after the passage of Obamacare and now essentially in a third Obama term, health insurance continues to get less affordable by the day while health care costs continue to rise.
I support commonsense, conservative reforms that will drive costs down, increase options and access, and align with a free market-based approach. I will work to lower prescription drug costs, foster competition among providers and ultimately expand affordable health care access for all Alabamians.
As a daughter of the Wiregrass, I am also especially passionate about rural health care. Since Obamacare was enacted, 17 hospitals have closed in Alabama. We must close the health care gap that exists in our state, and part of that solution means closing the digital divide in Alabama by expanding telehealth options through increased access to high-speed broadband internet services. Our state currently ranks 47th in the nation in broadband connectivity, and that lack of access is negatively impacting health care, education, the economy and quality of life in communities across Alabama.
