Dear Dr. Eaton,
Thank you very much for your supportive words.
Perhaps it is helpful to think about gun violence as one of several societal harms in the United States, such as from cigarette smoking, drunk driving, drugs and obesity.
Great efforts of a various nature are made to lessen these harms.
Political leadership is usually important in the efforts.
Political leadership is needed to reduce gun violence.
The "Declaration of public officials for gun violence prevention" that is set out at https://al6thcongdist-ihaveuntiljan13.blogspot.com/2022/09/declaration-of-public-officials-for-gun.html is political leadership for reducing gun violence.
In Alabama, Gov. Ivey, unless subjected to great public pressure, is likely unwilling to show such political leadership.
Whether Alabama chambers of commerce are willing to exert pressure on Gov. Ivey is up to the chambers of commerce.
It is open to other parties in Alabama to pressure Gov. Ivey.
The situation is similar in other States.
I am adding as receiving copies of this email national gun violence reduction organizations to whom I have previously sent emails.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Rob Shattuck

Subject: Mountain Brook's Community Safety Meetings in November and guns
Dear Captain Carmack,
I am a Mountain Brook resident.
Community safety concerns are different in different communities. Mountain Brook's concerns are not identical to those in, say, the City of Birmingham.
At the same time, Mountain Brook residents work, shop and recreate outside of Mountain Brook; they are exposed to crime and gun violence dangers wherever they go; and they have a corresponding broad interest in community safety, both for their own sakes and for the sakes of their fellow citizens.
Police departments in the Birmingham area and elsewhere have a commonality of interest in safety in all their communities.
I am availing of MBPD's community safety meetings in November to ask you to raise in the Police Department an internal discussion about guns and what involvement the Mountain Brook Police Department should have in making advocacy about reducing gun violence.
I have been widely purveying the "Declaration of public officials for gun violence prevention" that is set out at https://al6thcongdist-ihaveuntiljan13.blogspot.com/2022/09/declaration-of-public-officials-for-gun.html.
The crux of the Declaration is that individual gun rights can and should be limited to self-defense purposes, the government can and should regulate guns for public safety in ways that do not limit guns for self-defense purposes, and public officials should should show political leadership to reduce gun violence by publicly enunciating the foregoing and putting forth regulatory proposals for public safety that the officials believe preserve citizen gun rights for self-defense purposes.
I think there is a status quo in which there is no prospect for gun violence reduction; the status quo needs to get changed in order to reduce gun violence; and the Declaration is an act of political leadership that can can change the status quo and lead to gun violence reduction.
If the Mountain Brook Police Department agrees, I hope the Department will communicate the same to other Alabama police departments and sheriff's departments, directly or through the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, the Alabama Sheriffs Association and the Alabama Association of Police Chiefs.
Thank you very much for your attention to this email.
Sincerely,
Rob Shattuck

Subject: June 3, 2022 article EXPERTS RENEW CALL FOR ACTION TO PREVENT GUN VIOLENCE
Dear University of Virginia Professors Bradshaw and Cornell:
It seems to me that the United States Supreme Court holding this summer that the constitution protects “an individual’s right to carry a handgun for self-defense outside the home” has made it harder to reduce gun violence in the United States, and the prospects for reducing gun violence have been lessened.
I think gun control advocates need to adapt to the Supreme Court's holding. I am doing that in Alabama with the "Declaration of public officials for gun violence prevention" that is set out at https://al6thcongdist-ihaveuntiljan13.blogspot.com/2022/09/declaration-of-public-officials-for-gun.html.
I am particularly trying to instigate pressure on Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey to make the Declaration. My efforts are indicated at https://al6thcongdist-ihaveuntiljan13.blogspot.com/2022/10/pressuring-gov-ivey-for-leadership-on.html. My efforts include contacting UAB professors who work in the domain of public health and have been public about their gun violence concerns.
I have no credentials or professional position in making my advocacy and must resort to a lot of "reaching outing" and recording that "reaching out" so that others may see and possibly avail of the same in their own advocacy.
This email "reaching out" to you is prompted by the gun violence at UVA this week and by the above referenced June 3, 2022 article (at https://education.virginia.edu/news-stories/experts-renew-call-action-prevent-gun-violence) reporting on your own gun violence prevention advocacy.
Besides reaching out to public health professors, I also need to get opinion from constitutional law professors about what the Second Amendment protects and what it does not protect. For that reason I have copied this email to Professor Risa Goluboff, who is both Dean of the UVA law school and a constitutional law professor.
Thank you for your attention to this email.

UA law Prof. Vars -Weapon of Choice

The above quoted Prof.Vars co-authored a 2018 book entitled Weapons of Choice, which is described at https://www.hup.harvard.edu/catalog.php?isbn=9780674241091 as follows

How ordinary Americans, frustrated by the legal and political wrangling over the Second Amendment, can fight for reforms that will both respect gun owners’ rights and reduce gun violence.

Efforts to reduce gun violence in the United States face formidable political and constitutional barriers. Legislation that would ban or broadly restrict firearms runs afoul of the Supreme Court’s current interpretation of the Second Amendment. And gun rights advocates have joined a politically savvy firearms industry in a powerful coalition that stymies reform.

Ian Ayres and Fredrick Vars suggest a new way forward. We can decrease the number of gun deaths, they argue, by empowering individual citizens to choose common-sense gun reforms for themselves. Rather than ask politicians to impose one-size-fits-all rules, we can harness a libertarian approach—one that respects and expands individual freedom and personal choice—to combat the scourge of gun violence.

Ayres and Vars identify ten policies that can be immediately adopted at the state level to reduce the number of gun-related deaths without affecting the rights of gun owners. For example, Donna’s Law, a voluntary program whereby individuals can choose to restrict their ability to purchase or possess firearms, can significantly decrease suicide rates. Amending red flag statutes, which allow judges to restrict access to guns when an individual has shown evidence of dangerousness, can give police flexible and effective tools to keep people safe. Encouraging the use of unlawful possession petitions can help communities remove guns from more than a million Americans who are legally disqualified from owning them. By embracing these and other new forms of decentralized gun control, the United States can move past partisan gridlock and save lives now.

Subject: New NY gun law; PreventGunViolenceDeclaration
Dear Mr. Kehoe, Mr. Mitchell, and Sheriffs Milby, Kusminsky and Garcia:
I live in Alabama.
This email is prompted by the news reporting that some sheriffs in upstate New York are saying they will not aggressively enforce gun regulations the NY state lawmakers passed last summer forbidding concealed weapons in so-called sensitive areas. See article at https://dnyuz.com/2022/10/09/another-challenge-to-new-yorks-gun-law-sheriffs-who-wont-enforce-it/
The article says the New York State Sheriffs’ Association called the new law a “thoughtless, reactionary action” that aims to “restrain and punish law-abiding citizens.”
Further the article makes characterizations about the U.S. District Court judge blocking large portions of the law as "dealing a major blow to lawmakers in Albany who had sought to blaze a trail for other states after the Supreme Court in June struck down a century-old New York law that had strictly limited the carrying of weapons in public." and that "Between the court challenge and the hostility of many law enforcement officers, New York’s ambitious effort could be teetering."
The US Supreme Court decision in the New York State Rifle Association case will likely mean years of heightened battling between gun rights advocates seeking the expansion of gun rights, and gun control advocates seeking gun regulation that is constitutional under the New York State Rifle Association case.
Law enforcement should be involved and say what law enforcement advocates to achieve gun violence reduction..
In this new gun rights versus gun control landscape, I am purveying the "Declaration of public officials for gun violence prevention" that is set out at https://al6thcongdist-ihaveuntiljan13.blogspot.com/2022/09/declaration-of-public-officials-for-gun.html. The Declaration is centered on gun regulation being based on limiting individual gun rights to self-defense (and hunting) purposes. I think such limitation to self-defense purposes can be very favorable from the perspective of law enforcement. (I have included Mr. Mitchell, who is counsel to the New York State Sheriffs' Association, as an addressee on this email because there are Second Amendment questions about the government limiting individual gun rights to self-defense (and hunting) purposes.)
The above news reporting evidences much attention is being given in New York state to gun rights versus gun control in the new legal landscape, and that attention is a good thing.
In Alabama, I think not so much, and there should be more attention.
The purpose of this email is to call to the attention of Alabama lawmakers, law enforcement and other officials how New York state is trying to work through the new situation as between gun rights and gun control. I am doing this by means of the large number of Alabama parties whom I have copied on this email.
Thank you.

Subject: In the time of Raleigh's gun violence horror
Dear Mayor Baldwin, Councilor Cox, House Speaker Moore, Ms. Beasley, Ms. Foushee and Raleigh Police Chief Patterson:
I live in Alabama.
As you reel from Raleigh's mass shooting, your thoughts must turn at some point to the question of what is ever going to reduce the epidemic of gun violence that is inflicting so much pain and loss on the American people.
For what it is worth, appended below is an email I wrote to the New York State Sheriffs' Association and to three New York sheriffs, which email I copied to a large number of Alabama parties.
I hope my email offers helpful ideas to consider about gun regulation reducing gun violence.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Rob Shattuck

Subject: 2022 BENEFIT DINNER: BELIEVE IN BLUE
Dear President Henry,
I have been purveying a "Declaration of public officials for gun violence prevention" that is set out at https://al6thcongdist-ihaveuntiljan13.blogspot.com/2022/09/declaration-of-public-officials-for-gun.html.
The Declaration acknowledges the right of citizens to own and carry guns for self-defense purposes.
In addition, however, the Declaration propounds that the Second Amendment does not give citizens the right to bear arms against the Federal, state and local governments and their law enforcement, and further the Second Amendment does not give citizens a right to bear arms for aggression and intimidation against other citizens.
On the question of what the Second Amendment protects, I have tried to get the opinions of Alabama constitutional law professors (including Prof. Olree). I will continue to solicit their opinions by copying them on this email.
I contend that the Declaration is highly supportive of law enforcement. See https://al6thcongdist-ihaveuntiljan13.blogspot.com/2022/10/law-enforcement-preventgunviolencedecla.html and https://al6thcongdist-ihaveuntiljan13.blogspot.com/2022/10/are-repubs-winning-on-crime-issue.html.
As the forgoing links indicate, I have solicited the views of Alabama law enforcement about the Declaration.
I think it would be a great follow up to Faulkner's 2022 BENEFIT DINNER: BELIEVE IN BLUE for you to think about the "Declaration of public officials for gun violence prevention" and whether the Declaration would be supportive of Alabama law enforcement if influential public officials in Alabama endorsed the Declaration.
From Rebecca Burylo's article about the dinner, it would seem that there are many in Alabama law enforcement with whom you could discuss whether the Declaration would be supportive of Alabama law enforcement if influential public officials in Alabama made the Declaration.
I think it is clear that this summer's Bruen case has made reducing gun violence in the United States harder then ever. In this regard please read the article by Chip Brownlee at https://www.thetrace.org/2022/07/the-real-significance-of-the-supreme-courts-gun-decision/.
Thank you.
Sincerely,

"Declaration of public officials for gun violence prevention" at https://al6thcongdist-ihaveuntiljan13.blogspot.com/2022/09/declaration-of-public-officials-for-gun.html is getting cluttered with tweets and emails to different types of parties, including elected public officials, law enforcement, chambers of commerce, and public health and gun violence research and advocacy professionals and groups. To alleviate this clutter I will start posting on this blog entry tweets and emails to public health and gun violence research and advocacy professionals and groups.

How do AL TV stations live up?

Below is copied and pasted from https://www.wsfa.com/2022/09/06/sign-up-find-facts-fast-course-spotting-disinformation/
Gray Television is launching a new program ahead of the November midterm election to help voters differentiate between fact and fiction.
In partnership with the nonprofit Poynter Institute’s MediaWise program, Find Facts Fast is a free text message course designed to empower people with skills to better participate in the democratic process and spot misinformation online and in their social media feeds.
“Elections make fertile grounds for bad actors, domestic and abroad, to plant seeds of disinformation, due in part to polarization, heightened emotions and a 24/7 news cycle on social feeds,” said MediaWise director Alex Mahadevan. “Find Facts Fast helps anyone … wade through the flood of misinformation we’ll see in the coming months and beyond.”
The instructors include a team of award-winning journalists, teaching learners how to spot misinformation, leverage digital tools to verify online content, identify videos and images that were manipulated, diversify their news diets to avoid echo chambers and practice click restraint.

Subject: How will AL TV stations live up to Poynter Institute’s MediaWise initiative?
Dear Alabama TV stations:
Per https://www.wsfa.com/2022/09/06/sign-up-find-facts-fast-course-spotting-disinformation/, Gray Television has launched a new program ahead of the November midterm election to help voters differentiate between fact and fiction.
The program is in a partnership with the MediaWise initiative of the Poynter Institute. It is called "Find Facts Fast" and is described as a free text message course designed to empower people with skills to better participate in the democratic process and spot misinformation online and in their social media feeds.
It is unclear to me how this will filter into the TV news presentations that Gray Television's Alabama TV stations make to their viewers during the next 31 days (or thereafter).
I have been complaining for months about how Alabama TV stations are doing their job in connection with the 2022 elections. (For this, see https://al6thcongdist-ihaveuntiljan13.blogspot.com/2022/09/know-truth-alabama.html and read links going back in time.)
The program that Gray Television has launched is an acknowledgment that something better is needed in their news business to serve Alabama voters and the democratic process in Alabama.
If there is a TV station in Alabama that does not believe that something better is needed in its news business to serve its viewers and the democratic process in Alabama, please say so.
Otherwise, I will assume it is generally believed by Alabama TV stations that something better is needed in their news business to serve Alabama voters and the democratic process in Alabama, and the only question is whether there is an ability and a willingness to do better.
Thank you.

Subject: FWIW -- AL TV stations and misinformation
Dear Professors Aghazadeh, Brunner, Linford, Youngblood, Delaney, Fairley, Filleppeli, Nelson, Franks, Blankenship, Carey, and Cofield:
I have previously emailed Professors Nelson, Franks, Blankenship, Carey, and Cofield concerning Alabama TV stations.
Per https://www.wsfa.com/2022/09/06/sign-up-find-facts-fast-course-spotting-disinformation/, Gray Television has launched a new program ahead of the November midterm election to help voters differentiate between fact and fiction.
Basically, given the magnitude of the misinformation problem in Alabama and in the rest of the United States, this initiative by Gray Television seems grossly inadequate, and I have written the below email to Alabama TV stations regarding the same.
You are Alabama professors of journalism and communication who teach students who progress to employment by Alabama TV stations.
Accordingly, I think it is appropriate for me to send this email to you.
Thank you

Subject: TWIMC - AL TV stations, misinformation, & AL chambers of commerce
To Whom It May Concern at Alabama chambers of commerce:
Per https://www.wsfa.com/2022/09/06/sign-up-find-facts-fast-course-spotting-disinformation/, Gray Television launched a new program ahead of the November midterm election to help voters differentiate between fact and fiction.
In the below email to twelve Alabama professors of journalism and communication, I say that, given the magnitude of the misinformation problem, I think the foregoing initiative by Gray Television is grossly inadequate.
I have not received any reaction by the professors of what they think.
I am not optimistic that Alabama TV stations, with or without Alabama professors of communication and journalism weighing in, will be anything other than grossly inadequate in how they attempt to ameliorate the misinformation problem in Alabama.
It would be nice for Alabama chambers of commerce to try to help Alabama TV stations with the stations' misinformation problem.
Thank you.

Subject: Feb Auburn Journalism. panel "Understanding Impact: Distinguishing between advocacy and journalism"
Dear Abbey and Destini,
On Thursday I tweeted regarding the two of you on the February Auburn Journalism panel "Understanding Impact: Distinguishing between advocacy and journalism," advertised as "looking at if advocacy plays a role in journalism and if so, what role it plays." https://twitter.com/RobShattuckAL06/status/1585608074076749824.
My interest is in Alabama local TV journalism and particularly whether they are able and willing to editorialize. See https://al6thcongdist-ihaveuntiljan13.blogspot.com/2022/07/al-tv-viewers-need-help-reaching-their.html.
I have been on the case of Alabama TV stations for months.
In reverse chronological order, see, e.g.,

The TV stations have ignored me.
I don't presume anything you say will influence the TV stations not to ignore me.
Please take this email as using you and your involvement with the "advocacy versus journalism" panel discussion in February as a way for me to continue to call out Alabama TV stations for intentionally or involuntarily failing their Alabama viewers.
I ask for your indulgence.
Thank you.

Subject: Please pass this along to your news people
Dear Alabama TV stations' sports and weather people:
Please pass along to your news people that the outcome of the 2022 elections will not make a difference in what will be done to tame inflation and improve the economy. https://al6thcongdist-ihaveuntiljan13.blogspot.com/2022/11/why-usa-will-not-be-happier-country-in.html.
I am asking you to do this because, when your news people don't respond, I don't know whether what I say registers with them, and your passing this along to your news people may help. https://al6thcongdist-ihaveuntiljan13.blogspot.com/2022/10/how-do-al-tv-stations-live-up.html,
Thank you.

Subject: Using you to continue to complain about AL TV stations
Dear Megan,
Earlier this week I tweeted the education news story you wrote (https://abc3340.com/newsletter-daily/tuscaloosa-city-schools-to-host-community-form-feedback-students-parents-northridge-high), and I added the same to https://al6thcongdist-ihaveuntiljan13.blogspot.com/2022/08/what-are-your-concerns-about-mtn-brook.html.
The Republicans have made education a prime 2022 election issue related to critical race theory, school closures in the pandemic, gender identification, and the indoctrination of students to be leftist socialists.
For me, the education issue exemplifies the nation's political and cultural polarization, in which extreme minorities on the two sides and their leaders control the politics and the political discourse, and in which they sideline the majority in the middle who can accept and would prefer agreements. This is accompanied by the two sides talking to only their own bases and not to the other side, and riling up their sides against the other side, and further by TV stations getting paid to run the one sided campaign ads that rile up the political bases against one another, and the TV stations failing their viewers by not informing them about how the viewers are subjected to one sided messaging to rile up the bases, and agreements being prevented on things that are acceptable to a majority in the middle but that are objected to by the extremes and their leaders who use their bases for the leaders to have power. https://al6thcongdist-ihaveuntiljan13.blogspot.com/2018/02/can-two-sides-talk.html
This underlies the great amount of complaining I have been doing about the TV stations, which complaining can be accessed at https://al6thcongdist-ihaveuntiljan13.blogspot.com/2022/10/how-do-al-tv-stations-live-up.html and links therein.
Thus far my complaining has not been responded to. I suspect after November 8th my complaining will continue.
I have tried to draw in Alabama professors of journalism and communications on this, but thus far to no avail.
Please accept this email, and its being added to https://al6thcongdist-ihaveuntiljan13.blogspot.com/2022/10/how-do-al-tv-stations-live-up.html, only as a manifestation of how limited I am in my citizen status.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Rob Shattuck
