This is a continuation of Be An Alabama Rootstriker* with Rob Shattuck: Draft statement to Birmingham City Council re gun control laws (al6thcongdist-ihaveuntiljan13.blogspot.com)

Alabama local authorities (city councils, county commissions, police departments and sheriff's offices) are starting to stand up to the Republicans in the Alabama legislature who want to kill Alabamians by  blocking sensible gun laws.

This blog entry will record the developments that are going on.

Subject: Bessemer Police chief claims to be 'hindered' by permitless carry in midst of gun violence wave
Dear Bessemer Police Chief Mike Wood,
I wish to cheer you on in your publicly speaking out against permitless carry and saying to the media, ""We have been hindered by legislation that has been passed in the state of Alabama, taking away pistol permits." Bessemer Police chief claims to be 'hindered' by permitless carry in midst of gun violence wave (1819news.com).
You may be interested in the below email I sent last month to Jacksonville Police Chief Marcus Wood, who is the new president of the Alabama Association of Chiefs of Police (plus included emails).
If there is anything I can do to help you, Mayor Gulley and the Bessemer city council to reduce gun violence in Bessemer, please do not hesitate to ask me.
For your information, the numerous parties shown as being copied on this email are contacts whom I have developed in connection with my work to try to reduce gun violence, and I hope some of them will do their own cheering on of you in your speaking out publicly against permitless carry.

Subject: Birmingham's gun violence crisis and the 2024 FOOD + Culture Festival
Dear Frank (Stitt), Cathy (Sloss Jones), and Leigh (Sloss-Corra),
The extreme pain of Saturday night's mass shooting at Five Points South is wracking Birmingham.
In Sunday's press conference, Mayor Woodfin cried out for action by lawmakers. Woodfin calls on lawmakers to take action following mass shooting in Birmingham (cbs42.com)
Ever since the Galleria Mall shooting in 2018, I as a lowly citizen have been crying out for the same.
During the past year I have focused on trying to get local authorities (city councils, county commissions, police departments and sheriff's offices) to stand up to the Republicans in the Alabama legislature who want to kill Alabamians by their blocking stricter gun laws (or passing more lenient gun laws) in Alabama. My efforts in this regard are detailed at Be An Alabama Rootstriker* with Rob Shattuck: Local authorities for stricter gun laws (al6thcongdist-ihaveuntiljan13.blogspot.com)' and Be An Alabama Rootstriker* with Rob Shattuck: Draft statement to Birmingham City Council re gun control laws (al6thcongdist-ihaveuntiljan13.blogspot.com).
Saturday night's horror was in the middle of Birmingham's 2024 FOOD + Culture Festival, and you are presumably experiencing special trauma from your roles and hard work in trying to make the festival.as successful as it could be. (Frank Stitt Award (bhamfoodplus.com) and https://bhamnow.com/2024/09/13/your-guide-to-the-birmingham-foodculture-festival-sept-19-22/)
In your reaction to all of this, I would like you to think about how well (or not) Rep. Gary Palmer has served the Birmingham community as regards gun violence. For this purpose, please take a look at his 2023 interview with CBS42 at Rep. Gary Palmer on conclusion of House Speaker vote (cbs42.com) (starting at time 2:32) and his 2019 interview with Pam Huff at Rep. Gary Palmer on 2nd Amendment, Domestic Terrorism, and Solutions - YouTube.
May Saturday night's horror finally, really, mean, ENOUGH IS ENOUGH in Alabama.
Sincerely,
Rob Shattuck

Subject: Trump, football and guns
Dear Alabama TV reporters:
Trump is coming to Alabama for the football game on Saturday.
Tremulous Trump Republican toadies such as Tommy Tuberville, Katie Britt, Gary Palmer, Steve Marshall, John Wahl and Wes Allen are likely focused at this time on how they can best prostrate themselves before their orange Sun King on Saturday.
Said Republican toadies are not likely to be receptive to having serious conversations with Alabama TV reporters this week about Alabama's gun violence crisis and whether Alabama Republicans in Congress and in the Alabama legislature need to stop killing Alabamians in their opposition to stricter gun laws in Alabama (or in their loosening of Alabama's gun laws).
While Alabama TV reporters will most likely be dissed if they seek serious interviews about gun violence with Alabama Republicans this week who are in heat for Trump's attention on Saturday, Alabama TV reporters might nonetheless prepare themselves for unlikely interview opportunities by watching Gary Palmer's 2019 interview with Pam Huff at Rep. Gary Palmer on 2nd Amendment, Domestic Terrorism, and Solutions (youtube.com) and his 2023 interview with Andrea Lindenberg at Rep. Gary Palmer on conclusion of House Speaker vote (cbs42.com) (starting at time 2:32).
Good luck!

Subject: Faith leaders, Tuscaloosa police team up for Ceasefire Campaign
Dear Mayor Maddox, Tuscaloosa City Councilors, Police Chief Brantley, Pastor Ransey O'Daniel and Pastor Adam Robertson:
Numerous parties in Alabama are trying to work together to reduce gun violence, such as the joint efforts of Tuscaloosa churches and the Tuscaloosa police to "get people to put their guns down" as reported at https://www.wbrc.com/2024/08/30/faith-leaders-tuscaloosa-police-team-up-ceasefire-campaign/.
Unfortunately, the Republicans in the Alabama legislature are not joining in to do what they can do to get people to put their guns down, and instead such Republicans want more guns in people's hands for use to kill Alabamians.
In Alabama, only the Alabama legislature can pass laws that can help keep guns from getting in the hands of people and being used to kill Alabamians.
In the face of the refusal of the Republicans in the Alabama legislature to pass sensible laws to reduce the killing of Alabamians, I have been advocating for more than a year that Alabama local authorities (city councils, county commissions, police departments and sheriff's offices) publicly point fingers at the Republicans in the Alabama legislature about this, by means of such local authorities passing resolutions and issuing public statements with a view to shaming the Republicans about what they are doing to kill Alabamians. See Be An Alabama Rootstriker* with Rob Shattuck: Local authorities for stricter gun laws (al6thcongdist-ihaveuntiljan13.blogspot.com).
As the foregoing link indicates, I have contacted scores of local authorities and their personnel and other interested Alabama parties (including the below May 21, 2024, email to Tuscaloosa Assistant Police Chief Heath Clark and the Tuscaloosa City Council) in order to move my advocacy forward.
If you think my efforts are worthwhile and want to help in such efforts, please let me know.
Sincerely,
Rob Shattuck

Subject: UAB criminal justice professor weighs in on how to curb violent crime
Dear Professor Walker and Lisa Crane:
In the "stop the violence" interview of Professor Walker that is posted at UAB criminal justice professor weighs in on how to curb violent crime, the one thing that is not mentioned for helping reduce gun violence in Alabama is that of stricter gun laws.
Professor Walker is on the board of directors of Crime Stoppers of Metro Alabama (https://crimestoppersmetroal.org/about/).
I have been importuning Professor Waller to present to the board of directors that it advocate for stricter gun laws in Alabama in order to help reduce gun violence.
I have been particularly urging that local Alabama authorities (city councils, county commissions, police departments and sheriff's offices) stand up to the Republicans in the Alabama legislature who want to kill Alabamians by the blocking that the Republicans do of stricter gun laws (or their passing more lenient gun laws) in Alabama. Be An Alabama Rootstriker* with Rob Shattuck: Local authorities for stricter gun laws.
I suggest that Lisa Crane follow up on the above interview of Professor Walker and ask him where the board of directors of Crime Stoppers of Metro Alabama stands on the matter of advocating for stricter gun laws in Alabama. Then, after Lisa Crane gets an answer to that question, I suggest she press Republican lawmakers in Alabama why they want to kill Alabamians by the blocking that the Republicans do of stricter gun laws (or their passing more lenient gun laws) in Alabama.
Sincerely,
Rob Shattuck
