70 days to go for AL institutions to show their civic responsibility

In May 2022 I initiated a blog entry entitled "A time for AL institutional respect and trust", which is at Be An Alabama Rootstriker* with Rob Shattuck: A time for AL institutional respect and trust (al6thcongdist-ihaveuntiljan13.blogspot.com).

I have made appeals to Alabama TV stations, Alabama governmental entities, the Alabama law profession, the Alabama business community, the Alabama academic community, Alabama health care professionals, and others, to improve our democratic processes and particularly to better inform Alabamians so they may more intelligently make voting decisions in the democratic process for their own benefit.  These appeals may be sampled at Be An Alabama Rootstriker* with Rob Shattuck: Getting AL TV stations to do better in 2024 elections (al6thcongdist-ihaveuntiljan13.blogspot.com)Be An Alabama Rootstriker* with Rob Shattuck: Interim Alabama report to ABA Task Force for American Democracy (al6thcongdist-ihaveuntiljan13.blogspot.com)Be An Alabama Rootstriker* with Rob Shattuck: Alabama evangelicals and "The Kingdom, the Power and the Glory" (al6thcongdist-ihaveuntiljan13.blogspot.com)Be An Alabama Rootstriker* with Rob Shattuck: UAB Critical Conversations and American Democracy (al6thcongdist-ihaveuntiljan13.blogspot.com)Be An Alabama Rootstriker* with Rob Shattuck: Draft statement to Birmingham City Council re gun control laws (al6thcongdist-ihaveuntiljan13.blogspot.com)Be An Alabama Rootstriker* with Rob Shattuck: Letter to AL State Public Health Committee (al6thcongdist-ihaveuntiljan13.blogspot.com)

Subject: State Bar of Georgia and ABA Task Force for American Democracy
Dear State Bar of Georgia Executive Committee:
The yearlong work of the American Bar Association Task Force for American Democracy has wrapped up for now.
ABA President Mary Smith issued an August 2, 2024, statement about the Task Force's work, which statement is posted at https://www.americanbar.org/content/dam/aba/administrative/news/2024/aba-democracy-task-force.pdf.
Quoting from the statement:
... it is imperative for the American Bar Association, and the legal profession it represents, to lead the way in fortifying our democratic institutions. We are uniquely equipped to uphold the rule of law, rejuvenate judicial norms, safeguard election integrity and protect the dedicated professionals and volunteers who uphold our legal system.
. . .
Through extensive research, community engagement via listening tours and numerous consultations, the Task Force has identified key issues undermining our democratic institutions. Notably, the rise of misinformation, the normalization of political violence and a growing disillusionment with democratic governance have emerged as critical concerns. Our observations indicate that these issues are exacerbated by a polarization that has infiltrated the very fabric of our society, making reasoned, bipartisan dialogue more crucial than ever."
Accompanying President Smith's statement is a Task Force analysis that reflects the group’s assessment of the current state of our democracy, outlines the Task Force’s activities, and sets forth specific actions lawyers and citizens can take between now and the November election to support democracy and the rule of law.
From a section of the analysis captioned "WHAT INDIVIDUAL LAWYERS CAN DO", I quote the following items:
2. Volunteer:
b. Give talks in your community and offer to write in your local newspaper about the rule of law, democracy and our elections.
c. Check in with your local bar association on where they may need help defending democracy and the rule of law.
3. Be a democracy leader in your community:
a. Stand up for our: i. Judges, court workers and our justice system ii. Election workers and election processes iii. American democracy and the rule of law.
b. Make sure you’re knowledgeable on the Constitution, the rule of law and democracy.
c. Actively dispel election misinformation and disinformation in your community as it arises.
d. Work to improve public dialogue by modeling and encouraging ways for members of your community to engage in civil and respectful discussion despite political differences.
e. Condemn violence or the threat of violence, especially as it relates to our elections and our judicial system.
f. Attend a local Braver Angels or Living Room Conversations session to help bridge the partisan divides in your community and encourage others to do so as well.
4. Share this list with your colleagues and members of the bar and encourage them to get involved in the above activities.
I am a retired lawyer in Alabama.
For a year I have been urging Alabama lawyers to undertake activities supportive of the Task Force's mission. I will continue this effort until the election and am copying on this email a number of Alabama contacts.
With less than three months to go until November 5th, I think the mission of the ABA Task Force needs as much pushing by individual lawyers as they are willing to provide. Please consider this email to the Executive Committee of the State Bar of Georgia to be in that vein.
Thank you for reading this email.
Sincerely,
Rob Shattuck

Subject: Capitol Journal's coverage of BCA Governmental Affairs Conference
Dear BCA Directors of Governmental Affairs Caroline Franklin and William Newman:
Since sending you my August 14th email (appended below) that was prompted by the Yellowhammer News article Alabama's federal lawmakers connect infrastructure as key to economic growth at BCA conference - Yellowhammer News, I have watched Todd Stacy's Capitol Journal show about the BCA conference (posted at Capitol Journal - August 16, 2024 (youtube.com)).
I think Todd's Capitol Journal show can help my objective of Alabamians being better informed about the economy and inflation so they can vote more intelligently in the 2024 election.
Anchors and reporters at Alabama TV stations should watch Todd's show to learn what Alabama's business and political leaders talked about at the conference for making Alabama and the Alabama economy better for Alabamians, the prime subjects being Alabama work force development (including education and childcare) and Alabama infrastructure (including state and local funding and public/private partnerships).
The Alabama TV anchors and reporters will learn little or nothing was said about what the United States Presidential candidates are saying about the economy or about what the Presidential candidates say they will do or try to do regarding the economy, and little or nothing was said about how the same bears on (or not) and affects (or not) what Alabama's business and political leaders talked about at the conference for making Alabama and the Alabama economy better for Alabamians.
I wish to continue to call on the Business Council of Alabama, Alabama TV stations and Alabama economics professors to think up how they can, in the next 80 days, contribute to Alabamians being better informed about the economy and inflation, so they can vote more intelligently in the 2024 election.
Thank you (and I very much hope something will be undertaken).
Sincerely,
Rob Shattuck

Subject: Alabama’s federal lawmakers connect infrastructure as key to economic growth at BCA conference
Dear BCA Directors of Governmental Affairs Caroline Franklin and William Newman:
The annual Governmental Affairs Conference of the Business Council of Alabama focused on infrastructure as a "central element to Alabama’s success in the 21st Century." Alabama's federal lawmakers connect infrastructure as key to economic growth at BCA conference - Yellowhammer News
I think Alabamians should be better informed about infrastructure as a "central element to Alabama’s success in the 21st Century", I particularly think Alabamians should be better informed about the sources of funding (Federal and local) for Alabama infrastructure and about the relationship between all infrastructure funding nationally (of which Alabama funding is a part) and the inflation that is a top issue in the 2024 election, so that Alabamians can more intelligently cast their votes in the 2024 election.
In June I wrote the below email to Alabama economics professors soliciting their involvement and the involvement of Alabama TV stations to better inform Alabamians about the economy and inflation.
This email is to solicit the involvement of the BCA in the foregoing objective.
Please let me know if the BCA is willing to participate so that Alabama voters may more intelligently cast their votes in the 2024 election
Thank you.

Subject: Alabama economics professors and civic responsibility
Dear UAB Collat School of Business Dean Shook; UA Culverhouse College of Business Dean Palan; Auburn University Economics Department Chair Ziebarth; Samford University Department of Economics, Finance, and Quantitative Analysis, Chair Jones; and University of Montevallo Stephens College of Business Interim Chair Garrity:
This email is in follow up to my April 25th email to you, which email bears the subject line "Alabama economics professors and civic responsibility," and which email can be found at Be An Alabama Rootstriker* with Rob Shattuck: Getting AL TV stations to do better in 2024 elections (al6thcongdist-ihaveuntiljan13.blogspot.com).
Here is my proposal development.
Take the inflation issue. I propose the drafting of a one page statement for TV stations to present to their viewers that sets out the causes of the inflation shown on Current US Inflation Rates: 2000-2024; positive and negative effects on the economy and otherwise accompanying the inflation; governmental action at this time that may reduce the inflation; and positive and negative effects on the economy and otherwise that may result from the governmental action.
The purpose of the statement would be to help Alabama voters better understand the inflation issue. Before being used, the statement would be circulated to Alabama's members of Congress for their views about how well the statement serves its purpose.
After the statement is finalized, participating Alabama TV stations would read the statement on one or more news shows and post the statement on their websites.
The foregoing idea is subject to any suggestions for any ways for the TV stations to better help their viewers understand the inflation issue.
Please let me know if there is an economics professor in your department who is willing to participate in this proposal.
I am copying TV stations on this email and will contact them to find out whether there are TV stations that are willing to participate.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Rob Shattuck

Dear Dr Sutter:
This email is prompted by your article "Price gouging, inflation and the illusion of price controls" published yesterday by Yellowhammer News at Dr. Daniel Sutter: Price gouging, inflation and the illusion of price controls - Yellowhammer News.
I very much desire for Alabama voters to be better informed about the economy and inflation in order that they may vote more intelligently in the 2024 election.
I call to your attention the below email (and included emails) that I have circulated to the Business Council of Alabama, Alabama TV stations, and other economics professors in Alabama, done as part of my seeking for Alabama voters to be better informed about the economy and inflation.
To the extent you are similarly moved in favor of Alabama voters being better informed about the economy and inflation in order that they may vote more intelligently in the 2024 election, I hope you will add your efforts in this regard.
Thank you.

Subject: Regarding Tuesday and reducing gun violence
Dear Jeff,
Per our previous emails, I am available for a phone conversation anytime Tuesday (or any other day next week). My number again is 205-967-5586.
At the moment, I am particularly keen on availing of the next 65 days of the Harris-Walz campaign to publicize the cause of stricter gun laws to reduce gun violence in Alabama.
I am trying to use Harris-Walz on other important issues and to get Alabama TV stations to do a better job of informing Alabamians on these issues, so Alabama voters can vote more intelligently in the 2024 election. See Be An Alabama Rootstriker* with Rob Shattuck: 70 days to go for AL institutions to show their civic responsibility (al6thcongdist-ihaveuntiljan13.blogspot.com).
In connection with the foregoing, I have been sending emails related to the issues in question that have included Alabama TV stations, and I am copying the TV stations on this email as well.
The Board of Directors of Crime Stoppers of Metro Alabama can make a big difference for reducing gun violence by means of stricter gun laws.
The local news has been reporting on the success of Crime Stoppers and the police in getting citizens who know about crimes to come forward with the information to Crime Stoppers and the police.
If there were stricter gun laws, citizens coming forward to Crime Stoppers and the police with information about violations of the stricter gun laws would go a long way in reducing gun violence, I think.
It is up to you and the Crime Stoppers Board about how you and they want to proceed regarding what I am recommending. Please just let me know.
Thank you, Jeff.
Sincerely,
Rob

Subject: AL TV stations --Tuscaloosa debate; next week's ABC debate; next 60 days
Dear Alabama communications, journalism and other professors:
In December I sent you the below email "Assessing the performance of AL TV stations this week in connection with tonight's debate in Tuscaloosa". (UA Professor Darrin Griffin asked me to remove him from my email list, so I have not included him on this email.)
I don't know how much you care about how Alabama TV stations prove themselves in the 2024 election.
I care, per https://al6thcongdist-ihaveuntiljan13.blogspot.com/2024/08/70-days-to-go-for-al-institutions-to.html.
I hope you care too.
Thanks.
Sincerely,
Rob Shattuck

Subject: Assessing the performance of AL TV stations this week in connection with tonight's debate in Tuscaloosa
Please hone your judgments about how well former students of yours, and others, who are at Alabama TV stations have done and will do this week in connection with tonight's debate in Tuscaloosa.
I will endeavor during the next week to compile an evaluation, and I hope you will participate with me. https://al6thcongdist-ihaveuntiljan13.blogspot.com/2023/12/alabama-and-debate.html
Thank you very much.
