Subject: ADAA & Declaration of public officials for gun violence prevention
Dear Alabama District Attorneys Association President Bailey:
This email is prompted by the article District attorneys prepare public safety package for lawmakers — 'The main piece of our package is going to be violent crime',
The article quotes you saying about violent crime the following:
"This has obviously plagued the state of Alabama. We have, especially in our major metropolitan areas, we've seen just so much violent crime and continue to. Being the District Attorney in Montgomery County, pending in my office right now, we have pending approximately 300 homicides, and it just doesn't seem like it's going to slow down. So, violent crime is extremely important to our association and to make sure we have the tools to fight violent crime."
Gun control laws are a tool to fight violent crime.
Gun control laws are, however, subject to the Second Amendment.
Correctly or incorrectly, the United States Supreme Court has held that, under the Second Amendment, citizens have a right to own and carry guns for self-defense.
For now that is the law of the land, and lawmakers, law enforcement authorities, judges and all who desire gun control laws to help fight violent crime are constrained by the foregoing Second Amendment limitation on gun control laws.
As a citizen, I have, since September, been purveying that governors, mayors, lawmakers, law enforcement officials, and others having public responsibility to prevent gun violence make a "Declaration of public officials for gun violence prevention" along the lines set out at https://al6thcongdist-ihaveuntiljan13.blogspot.com/2022/09/declaration-of-public-officials-for-gun.html.
From that declaration I have crafted the mantra #GunsForSelfDefenseOnly for use in shaping, advocating for, and defending in the courts, common sense solutions for reducing gun violence.
I hope the ADAA will advocate for Governor Ivey and other appropriate Alabama officials to make the "Declaration of public officials for gun violence prevention" such as I have suggested.
After I send this email, I will post the email at https://al6thcongdist-ihaveuntiljan13.blogspot.com/2023/03/adaa-declaration-of-public-officials.html.
Thank you for your attention.
Sincerely,
Rob Shattuck

Thank you, Susan and Paula.
Just to keep you current on what I am doing, this morning I emailed Alabama District Attorneys Association President Bailey relative to the "public safety package" that the ADAA submitted to Alabama's lawmakers, as reported in the article District attorneys prepare public safety package for lawmakers — 'The main piece of our package is going to be violent crime'.

Subject: For Mayor Hogeland: Sen. Britt's visit and "Declaration of public officials for gun violence prevention"
Dear Mayor Hogeland:
Sen. Britt tweeted about her visiting in Gardendale yesterday with mayors from across Jefferson County.
Her tweet said "Local leaders are best positioned to tackle local challenges and opportunities, and I’m always eager to hear how I can be a partner at the federal level in strengthening our communities."
The Alabama District Attorneys Association has submitted a "public safety package" to Alabama's lawmakers, as reported in the article District attorneys prepare public safety package for lawmakers — 'The main piece of our package is going to be violent crime'.
I emailed Alabama District Attorneys Association President Bailey, saying that, since September, I have been purveying that governors, mayors, lawmakers, law enforcement officials, and others having public responsibility to prevent gun violence should make a "Declaration of public officials for gun violence prevention" along the lines set forth in https://al6thcongdist-ihaveuntiljan13.blogspot.com/2022/09/declaration-of-public-officials-for-gun.html.
My email to President Bailey can be found at https://al6thcongdist-ihaveuntiljan13.blogspot.com/2023/03/adaa-declaration-of-public-officials.html.
I think Sen. Britt would make an excellent contribution to strengthening our communities if she took the lead in making the suggested "Declaration of public officials for gun violence prevention".
I hope you and the other mayors Sen. Britt visited with yesterday will consider said "Declaration of public officials for gun violence prevention", and, if you think Sen. Britt should take the lead in Alabama in making the Declaration, to request of Sen. Britt to do that.
I am copying Jefferson County District Attorneys Danny Carr and Lynneice O. Washington on this email to make sure they are aware of the email I sent to ADAA President Bailey.
Thank you for your attention to this email.

Subject: Last night's Alabama Moms Demand zoom call
Dear Chris:
I saw your name during the zoom call last night.
It seems that the Alabama Republican legislators have painfully rolled Alabama Moms Demand regarding permitless carry, and Alabama Moms Demand is deflated about their prospects for having a satisfying Advocacy Day in Montgomery this year.
I think Alabama Moms Demand should shift some of their focus away from the Alabama legislature and go hard at Alabama mayors, city councilors, county commissioners, sheriff's offices, and police departments to ask them to make a "Declaration of public officials for gun violence prevention" along the lines that I have set out at https://al6thcongdist-ihaveuntiljan13.blogspot.com/2022/09/declaration-of-public-officials-for-gun.html.
Such public declarations that are made I think can be used to build for the future of turning Alabama public opinion against the Republicans in the Alabama legislature.
If you would, please read the work I have done on this front during the past two days that is set out at https://al6thcongdist-ihaveuntiljan13.blogspot.com/2023/03/adaa-declaration-of-public-officials.html, and tell me what you think.
I believe on the call last night there was an Ann Ray who said she would like to visit the Shelby County sheriff's office and urge for repeal of permitless carry, and Ann was looking for someone to go with her. That is very up the alley I am advocating here, and I hope Susan and Paula will pass along my name to Ann Ray for going along with her.
Thanks, Chris, for whatever attention you can give to this email.
Sincerely,
Rob

Subject: Re: Alabama Moms Demand Action-Recording of Permitless Carry Law Meeting
Dear Paula and Susan,
Further to organizing and contacting sheriffs and legislators (and others I hope), here is what I suggest for Alabama Moms Demand Advocacy Day in Montgomery:
To wit, get Rep. Ensler and gun control cohorts he has in the Alabama House of Representatives and Alabama Senate to submit a "Resolution of the Alabama legislature for gun violence prevention," which resolution embodies in legislative form the "Declaration of public officials for gun violence prevention" set out at https://al6thcongdist-ihaveuntiljan13.blogspot.com/2022/09/declaration-of-public-officials-for-gun.html.
Such a resolution would presumably not pass in the Alabama legislature.
The object of the resolution would be to frame the public opinion debate in the vein of, on the one side (our side) saying:
"Yes, the United States Supreme Court has held that, under the Second Amendment, citizens have the right to own and carry guns for self-defense, and by implication the powers of government, lawmakers and law enforcement to protect the health and safety of the citizens and to defend the government itself are subject to the Supreme Court's holding citizens have the right under the Second Amendment to own and carry guns for self-defense. The powers of government, lawmakers and law enforcement to protect the health and safety of the citizens and to defend the government itself are, however, not abrogated by the Second Amendment, and such powers are to be and shall be exercised to constrain citizens in owning and carrying guns for other purposes than self-defense, such as preventing citizens from owning and carrying guns to aggress against and threaten other citizens, and to prevent them from owning and carrying guns for sedition against the government and attacking its law enforcement."
Framing the debate in foregoing way would be to force Alabama Republican lawmakers to take the opposite side and contend that, under the Second Amendment, citizens have a right to own and carry guns to aggress against and threaten other citizens and and a right to own and carry guns for sedition against the government and to attack its law enforcement.
If submitting the resolution as a bill in the Alabama legislature can get a public debate framed in the foregoing way, I think the majority of public opinion, even in Alabama, can be won over to our side.
I hope you will take up this suggestion for Alabama Moms Demand Advocacy Day in Montgomery.
Sincerely,
Rob

Subject: Safe gun storage bill and Ainsworth "pathetic" comment about Huntsville police officer
Dear Alabama Rep. Barbara Drummond and former U.S. Senator Doug Jones:
This email regards the safe gun storage bill that Rep. Drummond filed (reported at https://alabamareflector.com/2023/03/29/alabama-lawmaker-files-bill-requiring-safe-storage-of-firearms/ ) and former Senator Jones calling Lt. Gov. Ainsworth comment ‘pathetic’ regarding killing of Huntsville police officer (reported at https://www.al.com/news/2023/03/ainsworth-comment-pathetic-on-huntsville-police-officers-former-sen-doug-jones-says.html).
A. Safe gun storage bill
I think that common sense gun solutions (such as Rep. Drummond's safe gun storage bill) should be wrapped in the mantra #GunsForSelfDefenseOnly and should be supported by legislative body resolutions and public official declarations having the tenor of the "Declaration of public officials for gun violence prevention" that is set out at https://al6thcongdist-ihaveuntiljan13.blogspot.com/2022/09/declaration-of-public-officials-for-gun.html.
Alabama Representative Phillip Ensler has taken a lead in gun control in Alabama and I have urged that he and gun control cohorts he has in the Alabama House of Representatives and Alabama Senate submit a "Resolution of the Alabama legislature for gun violence prevention."
For more on this, please read https://al6thcongdist-ihaveuntiljan13.blogspot.com/2023/03/adaa-declaration-of-public-officials.html
I hope Rep. Drummond takes this up.
B. Sen. Jones calling Ainsworth comment "pathetic"
Guns are out of control in the United States.
Republicans such as Lt. Gov. Ainsworth, under the guise of the Second Amendment, are blocking common sense solutions for reducing gun violence, and this is making for police officers being exposed to more gun violence against them.
Police are becoming more supportive of gun controls. https://www.cnn.com/2022/06/16/politics/police-organizations-gun-control/index.html
The Moms Demand group in Alabama is undertaking to approach sheriff's offices to get their support for repealing the permitless carry law in Alabama, which became effective on January 1st.
Former Senator Jones should offer his support and suggestions for mobilizing public opinion in Alabama against permitless carry and for common sense gun solutions, including for Rep. Drummond's safe gun storage bill.
[This email has been sent to Rep. Drummond using her contact form on the Alabama House of Representative website. This email is also being posted at https://al6thcongdist-ihaveuntiljan13.blogspot.com/2023/03/adaa-declaration-of-public-officials.html.]

Dear Mr. Brasfield,
This email is prompted by John Sharpe's above captioned article, which article is posted on the Internet at https://www.al.com/news/2023/04/after-nashville-tragedy-will-any-gun-bills-be-a-priority-for-alabama-lawmakers.html.
The article says, "A wild card could exist in the coming weeks in the form of a gun-related package set to be pushed out by the Alabama District Attorney’s Association."
The purpose of this email is to inform your Association of County Commissions of Alabama that I have sent the below email to Alabama District Attorneys Association President Bailey related to its aforesaid gun package and to say that I hope your Association thinks the "Declaration of public officials for gun violence prevention" such as I have suggested at.https://al6thcongdist-ihaveuntiljan13.blogspot.com/2022/09/declaration-of-public-officials-for-gun.html would be a useful tool for reducing gun violence in Alabama.

Dear Dr. Gonsoulin and Dr. Dallas,
I am a Jefferson County resident.
For your information, the Alabama District Attorneys Association is submitting to Alabama lawmakers a public safety package, per the article District attorneys prepare public safety package for lawmakers — 'The main piece of our package is going to be violent crime',
The article prompted me to send the below email to Alabama District Attorneys Association President Bailey.
I have also emailed Jefferson County District Attorneys Danny Carr and Lynneice O. Washington about this.
I am copying Jefferson County Sheriff Mark Pettway on this email and also my Jefferson County Commissioner Steve Ammons.
Much work is needed to reduce gun violence in Alabama.
I hope it is heartening to you to know there are Alabamians trying on this.
Sincerely,
Rob Shattuck
